Brisbane is set to host nurses, researchers and innovators in the medical world who are working to transform healthcare globally.

The 15th International Congress on Nursing Informatics to be held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) in 2020, will showcase Australia’s leading role in digital health. With the largest per capita health informatics community in the world today, Australia is the perfect destination to host this biennial congress.

The Congress will be held in conjunction with Australia’s Annual Health Informatics Conference (HIC) with the two events expected to attract some 1500 delegates. BCEC and key convention partners, Tourism and Events Queensland and Brisbane Marketing, collaborated with the Health Informatics Society of Australia (HISA), Australia’s peak professional body for the digital health community, to secure the event for Brisbane.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said the 15th International Congress on Nursing Informatics would bring influential nurses, researchers and innovators in the medical field from around the world to Brisbane in 2020.

“This event is an opportunity for Queensland to showcase its world-class business events’ facilities and be part of this important medical conference,” Ms Jones said.

“Leaders from across the country and around the world in this medical field will travel to Brisbane to learn from the best in the industry.”

The Congress will be an opportunity to highlight Brisbane and Australia’s strengths in the sector and to further engage local universities, associations and government in Australia through networking, knowledge sharing and collaboration.

CEO of HISA, Dr Louise Schaper says the Congress will demonstrate Australia’s nursing informatics practice and research to the world as well as bringing best international practice and thinking to Australia.

“We hope the Congress will help to empower nurses with knowledge and leadership skills to take their rightful place in the digital transformation of our health system.”

Dr Schaper said the Congress would act as a catalyst to grow the digital nursing community even further. She said Australia was very strong in the digital health space with 98% of Australian GPs involved in the digital management of clinical care.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said, as Australia’s New World City, Brisbane was well-placed to host major international conventions.

“Brisbane is home to one of the world’s leading convention centres and will once again attract some of the best minds in the health industry for this major international event,” he said.

BCEC General Manager, Bob O’Keeffe said the Centre’s location in the heart of Brisbane’s Knowledge Corridor, surrounded by major hospitals, research institutes and universities makes it the ideal venue to host the Congress.

“Healthcare is a priority sector for both BCEC and Queensland and we were very pleased to work with our long term client, the Health Informatics Society of Australia and our city convention partners to bring this Congress to Brisbane.”
