Over 22 years Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre has earned a reputation for delivering outstanding expertise, earning the trust of the convention organising community and being voted “World’s Best” by clients.

Once dubbed the ‘Meryl Streep’ of venues for its award-winning reputation (165 national and international awards and counting!), the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC), has been named the “World’s Best Convention Centre 2016 – 2018” by the coveted International Association of Convention Centres (AIPC) APEX Award.

The internationally recognised AIPC Apex Award is based entirely on client evaluation with 90% of clients rating their overall experience at the venue as excellent. The Centre was also voted ‘World’s Best’ for its Food & Beverage receiving double the ratings of any other international convention centre.

This is the second world title bestowed on BCEC, having previously been awarded “World-Wide Convention Centre Team of the Year” by the London based Conference & Incentive Travel Magazine in recognition of the Centre’s high standards of personal service, capability and expertise.

So how do they do it? What are the magic ingredients that make BCEC so special?

A Unique Location

On the doorstep of the dynamic Asia Pacific Region, Brisbane is Australia’s city on the move; the gateway to The Great Barrier Reef, World Heritage Listed rainforests, pristine beaches and idyllic islands – the best of Australia is at your fingertips.

Brisbane is a modern, vibrant city with edgy new hotels, bars and restaurants. The city is experiencing an accommodation boom and is on track adding 1500 hotel rooms by 2020 – from budget and niche style properties, to five and six star international and boutique brands.

The Centre is located in the heart of the city at the epicentre of Brisbane’s vibrant, cultural and entertainment riverside precinct; a sophisticated upscale dining destination set within an oasis of lush parkland and Australia’s only inner-city sand and swimming beach.

Supporting Science, Research & Academics

Brisbane has a flourishing ‘knowledge’ economy and a world-leading research and development community – Brisbane is the birth place of the world’s first cancer vaccine. The Centre is located within Brisbane’s ‘Knowledge Corridor’; home to universities, hospitals and research centres.

The Centre has developed a valuable strategic partnership with Brisbane’s research and scientific communities through its highly successful Convention Advocates Partnership. The members are an elite group of influencers, including some of Australia’s top scientists, researchers and academics. It is a collaboration which is critical for attracting international scientific conventions to Brisbane and BCEC.

One such Advocate is Professor Ian Frazer, of the University of Queensland, whose work led to the development of cervical cancer vaccines, who says attracting conferences to Brisbane creates strong bonds with the worldwide scientific community, providing opportunities for knowledge sharing which helps them facilitate world class science and research.

“In my experience BCEC’s work with Brisbane’s universities and research institutes is absolutely necessary to attracting international scientific conferences to Brisbane.” BCEC Advocate Professor Ian Frazer

The wealth of medical expertise is increasingly seeing Brisbane and BCEC chosen as the location for major medical and scientific conferences. The past 12 months has seen conferences such as:

With the following events yet to come:

The BCEC Convention Advocates Program has been an outstanding success, putting Brisbane’s science and innovation excellence on the global agenda with the following highlights:

  • Celebrating its seventh anniversary in 2017
  • The Centre’s 74 Advocates have delivered a total of 86 conferences
  • Working with the BCEC team to deliver an economic value of AU$114 million to the city of Brisbane

BCEC has expanded the Advocates Partnership Program, developing the concept of inaugural conferences. The Centre works with Advocates and other leading scientists to identify niche scientific areas where Brisbane has strong expertise. The most recent of which Immunotherapy@Brisbane 2017 was held in May, the second in the series;

Brisbane is leading the world in immunotherapy. The Immunotherapy@Brisbane conference series provides the perfect platform for the world’s leading experts to come together to discuss emerging scientific breakthroughs of immune based therapies, one of the most powerful strategies to treat cancers, infectious diseases and autoimmune disorders.” BCEC Advocate Professor Rajiv Khanna, Deputy Coordinator, Immunology, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute

A Track Record for Delivering Excellence

Having celebrated 22 years of delivering successful conferences, BCEC has established an impressive track record of experience and industry knowledge.

The Centre’s reputation for successfully hosting high calibre international conferences is renowned, the pinnacle of which was the G20 Leader Summit which was the greatest gathering of world leaders in Australia’s history.

Hailed as the ‘friendliest’ and ‘best ever’ in the history of the Summit, the G20 is billed as the most significant and influential business event in the world. The international spotlight shone on BCEC’s world class capabilities and expertise in hosting major events.

“From the time the G20 Taskforce first entered into conversations with the BCEC team, our relationship was professional, collaborative and focused on results. From all on the G20 Taskforce, thank you to everyone at the BCEC for the role you played in helping to deliver a truly special, world-class event.” Ms Bernadette Welch, Head of G20 Operations, G20 Taskforce, The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet

It is not only the larger, very complex conventions that choose BCEC, with the opening of the Centre’s boutique expansion, BCEC on Grey Street was designed to accommodate smaller and medium sized conferences, BCEC took on the mantle of Australia’s most flexible meetings venue. The dedicated boutique meetings hub has exceeded expectations and is popular with smaller scientific meetings.

International meeting planners say the iconic design and niche nature of the venue, its flexibility and ability to ‘own’ an entire convention level for their event are significant influencing factors for choosing BCEC.

Clients Reap the Rewards of Collaboration and Partnerships

BCEC’s philosophy is to build collaborative relationships with clients, who are viewed as trusted partners. As a result, BCEC enjoys an exceptional repeat business rate of 68%.

The strategy around building enduring partnerships with clients and stakeholders is nothing new for BCEC – the Centre’s Advocate Program is the ultimate example of a successful partnership.

“We are confident of the direction and pathway ahead for BCEC. Building on the pillars of extensive industry experience and knowledge, strong client service and a culture of progressive thinking, BCEC will continue on its trajectory of strong growth.” Bob O’Keeffe, General Manager, Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre

In the last 12 months, the Centre has developed a new model of inaugurals with commercial stakeholder collaboration. The inaugural World of Drones Congress (WoDC) 31 August – 2 September 2017 will provide an international forum on the application of drones for the business, government and investment sectors and drone enthusiasts and is expected to attract 500 delegates.

The Centre is working towards a broader and more intensively collaborative strategy.  We are focusing on achieving greater impact and solid results with a strong and enduring partnership approach across clients and events.  The recently held 24th Annual International Conference of the Australasian Sonographers Association for 1,000 sonographers was one such event.

“It is really interesting working with BCECthey talk about partnership that is actually very real. I feel like we were listened to and I think we had very personable relations with everyone. BCEC put together a conference that really delivered for us. In fact, it has probably been our most successful ever.”  Dr Gillian Whalley, Acting CEO, Australasian Sonographers Association
